Personal Training Certification For NCCPT

NCCPT personal trainingLiving The Dream

I have been wanting to get into personal training for quite some time now but just haven’t had the funds. There are a number of personal training companies out there that I’ve researched -such as NASM, ACE, ISSA etc- and the cheapest course that I found was over $600. As luck would have it (I prefer to say it was a divine appointment) a new acquaintance of my wife told her about a special on Groupon for a personal trainer course that was only $148. (With the test being $299) This course is the National Council for Certified Personal Trainers. And to boot, someone bought it for me!

I didn’t realize it but when I was about to order the course, the Groupon special had already been expired for a few months. I had a momentary breakdown, thinking that I really missed out on a great opportunity  but the folks at NCCPT honored it anyways. When I ordered the course book (the PDF version was free but the hard copy is not; still cheap however) they threw in a free shirt. What a deal! Overall, I’m quite impressed with the folks at NCCPT. I’ve had a number of phone conversations with them and they’re quite pleasant to work with. I find them to be very patient -I’m kind of a handful e. g. very thorough on the OCD side- and supportive.

Personal Training Certification Standards

As far as the course itself, it’s rather in depth and a little intimidating at first. (I was happy to learn that NCCPT is one of about a dozen companies whose certification is NCCA accredited; the highest standard in the industry) It’s superfluous to say that this is a rigorous certification, though it was cheap, it’s a quality program (and organization).

There’s a number of topics covered in this personal training certification, such as: anatomy, stretching, business, special populations etc. In addition to the course book, there’s a number of videos to watch that accompany each chapter. There’s also a study guide and sample test that you can order (for a small fee) to increase your odds of success.

The study guide was included in the Groupon special and my wonderful wife made flash cards from it for me. I’m only a few weeks away from taking the test and I hope/pray that I pass this thing. On a quick side note, just yesterday I found a NCCPT study group that is proving to be very useful for those of us who are freaking out about taking the test. Wish me luck folks, I need this to happen. Ciao.

Update: I just took the test today (7-22-13), and I passed! On a side note, the test was actually included in the Groupon package. What a deal woot woot!

  1. Good Luck! Take your time ! 🙂

  2. This is awesome – I am interesting in doing the same thing as you are. I also need the funds – I guess i will keep my eye on Groupon. Tank you for sharing this!

  3. I just tested for and passed the NASM today. I bought it back in March and it was more expensive than what you paid but I am really glad that I have it under my belt now. I am an independent personal trainer with a small studio, but it’s nice to know that I have an accredited certification in case I need to work for a gym, etc.

Good luck taking your test. I found an app for my phone for the NASM and it was REALLY helpful. It was my main source of consistent study throughout the days and then I followed up with the book on the weekends. Maybe your cert has a similar app that will help you.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and liking my post. I’m looking forward to reading more of your blog 🙂

  4. Best of luck! I would have to agree that divine intervention seemed to play a role in everything coming together. Thanks for checking out my blog “Sitting On A Smaller Chair” I look forward to reading more from you.

  7. I am in the middle of getting NASM certified. How are you doing on your studying?

  9. Awesome job! Great deal and congrats on passing the test!

  10. Great job on the test, so glad that you are living your dream. May God bless you in many ways!

  11. Congrats! 🙂

  12. Congratulations!

  13. Do you think that just studying the study guide and practice test will suffice? I’m getting so overwhelmed with the material and figured I’d make flash cards from the guide and practice test. And congrats!

  14. Great – thanks! I’ve been going through and filling out the study guide as I read, then making flash cards. Then I’m going back and rereading concepts that I still don’t fully understand. I am taking the test in two weeks, so I’m feeling the pressure. But I know once my flash cards are complete and I can just drill the questions I’ll feel more confident. Thanks for the Study Group link!

  15. Good luck. I missed out on the training in my area by *this much* – they’re into the exams portion now. The closest place for me to do my certification training is 7 hours away. *sad face* So I’ll have to keep checking the calendar with the hoping that a new training session will be closer to my area soon.

  16. I took the test last night and passed! The flash cards definitely helped, but there was A LOT of actually applying the knowledge and thinking through what they were asking (so memorization wasn’t enough to get you through it). I was surprised it took me a full hour to take because I felt that I had thoroughly prepared myself. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the posts regarding this cert and for the advice–the facebook group REALLY helped! 🙂

  17. Congrats on passing! I take mine Friday morning!

  18. did you use your cert to work at a gym?

  19. So glad to have read your blog. It’s back on groupon and I want to get it and was looking for reviews to make my decision. As usual, there are people who totally trashed it, and others who were overly excited about it. : ) Your review seems honest and pushed me over the edge in deciding to purchase the program. Thank you!!! And thanks for the link to the study group.
